At just 16 years old, Symon Odhiambo found himself homeless and surviving on the streets of Kisumu’s Manyasini base. Life as a street boy was harsh and unforgiving, but a chance encounter during a street outreach program by Yatima Hope CBO became the turning point in his life.
During one of Yatima Hope’s health talk sessions, which focused on drug addiction, substance abuse, and reproductive health, Symon attended and listened intently. Moved by the discussions and the support offered, he expressed his desire to leave the streets and turn his life around. Understanding the critical need for safety, education, and reintegration, Yatima Hope connected Symon with a caregiver who helped him take the first steps towards a better future.
Symon joined Yatima Hope Rescue Centre, where he found the stability and support he had longed for. Over the next two years, Yatima Hope provided him with a safe environment, access to education, and the emotional support needed to rebuild his life. Symon thrived in this nurturing atmosphere, determined to make the most of the opportunity given to him.
As he approached adulthood, Yatima Hope continued to stand by Symon. Upon turning 18, he was guided through the process of acquiring a national identity card—a crucial document for any Kenyan citizen. With Yatima Hope’s assistance, Symon secured a job as a security guard at a local farm in Kisumu.
Today, Symon is a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative impact of community support. From the uncertainty of street life, he has transitioned to a stable job and a hopeful future. Symon’s journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, even the most vulnerable can rise above their circumstances and build a better life.
Yatima Hope is proud to have played a part in Symon’s success and remains committed to empowering more young people like him to reach their highest potential.
