Calvo Collins Onyango’s journey to stability began at the tender age of 10 when family separation forced him onto the streets. For three long years, Calvo called the streets of Kisumu home, facing the daily challenges of survival alone. It was during one of Yatima Hope CBO’s street outreach programs that Calvo’s life took a transformative turn.
During a health talk session organized by Yatima Hope, focusing on drug addiction, substance abuse, and reproductive health, Calvo attended and shared his story with one of the caregivers. The connection he made during this session became the first step toward a brighter future. Moved by the support and opportunities offered, Calvo expressed his desire to join the Yatima Hope Rescue Centre, seeking safety, education, and a chance at reintegration into society.
Once at Yatima Hope, Calvo began to rebuild his life. He was enrolled in school, and for the first time in years, he experienced the stability and care he had long missed. However, due to financial constraints, Calvo had to drop out of school. Despite this setback, Yatima Hope continued to support him as he transitioned into adulthood. When Calvo turned 18, Yatima Hope helped him obtain his national identity card, a critical step in securing his future.
Recognizing Calvo’s determination to build a better life, Yatima Hope provided him with two months of rent support, giving him the foundation to start his own business. With this support, Calvo began vending boiled eggs and smokies—a small but significant venture that allowed him to become financially independent. His business has since grown, enabling him to cover his rent, meals, and other basic needs.
Today, Calvo Collins Onyango is a thriving young entrepreneur, proud of the progress he has made. He remains closely connected to Yatima Hope, a testament to the enduring bond between the organization and those it serves. Calvo’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of community support and the potential for transformation when individuals are given the opportunity to rise above their circumstances.
Yatima Hope celebrates Calvo’s resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, and continues to stand by him and others like him, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to build successful, independent lives.
